About Lake Jocassee
Duke Power constructed Lake Jocassee in 1973. The creation of the 7500-acre lake was part of the Keowee-Toxaway power generating project that included the formation of Lake Keowee. Lake Jocassee has 75 miles of shoreline and is 300 feet deep in some parts. Many people regard Lake Jocassee as one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the country.
In
1964, Duke Power and Crescent Resources negotiated an agreement with the South Carolina
Wildlife Resources Commission (now the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources) to
include the lands of the Jocassee Gorges in the department’s Game Management Area program
(now the Wildlife Management Area program). The agreement first established formal public
access to the lake and surrounding areas. Public access is available through Devil’s Fork
State Park.
Today, because of the efforts, Lake Jocassee is known for its clean water, wildlife, and beautiful scenery. It is a popular destination spot for those wanting to enjoy the outdoors.
